Quneitra Governor Urges UN to Monitor Israeli Violations

Quneitra:The governor of Syria's southern Quneitra province has called on the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) to actively monitor and document Israeli violations in the region. This appeal was made during discussions with Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the meeting focused on the situation in Quneitra, UNDOF's role, and the effects of Israeli actions on the local residents. Ghassan al-Sayyed Ahmad, the governor, highlighted that documenting these violations in accordance with UNDOF's mandate could safeguard residents and alleviate their impacts.

The talks occurred against the backdrop of ongoing Israeli activities in Quneitra, which include raids, searches, detentions, and the establishment of temporary military checkpoints. A UN report dated September 23 has detailed continued breaches of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, noting Israeli military presence and operations in the area of separation.

As of August 12, Israeli forces were reported to be stationed at 11 positions on the Syrian side of the separation area. UNDOF, established in 1974, is tasked with overseeing the ceasefire and disengagement between Syrian and Israeli forces, with its mandate recently extended until December 31, 2026.

The Syrian government has reiterated its demand for Israel to withdraw from its territory, calling for respect for the 1974 agreement and Syria's sovereignty.
