Renewed US-Iran Tensions Complicate Efforts to End Conflict, Says EU

Brussels: The EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has expressed concerns that the renewed tensions between the United States and Iran are further complicating efforts to negotiate an end to the ongoing conflict. In a statement released on Wednesday, Kallas highlighted how the recent exchanges of fire have exacerbated already delicate discussions.

According to Anadolu Agency, Kallas emphasized the seriousness of Iran's recent actions, specifically its attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait, labeling them as unacceptable. She also pointed out that Iran's commitment to reopening the Strait of Hormuz has been undermined by its recent aggressive activities, which include attacks on ships near this critical maritime passage. Kallas called for the unimpeded freedom of navigation in these waters, which are vital for global energy supplies.

Kallas further announced that EU Foreign Ministers are scheduled to meet with their Gulf counterparts next Monday. The agenda will focus on collaboration to support the implementation of agreements aimed at preserving freedom of navigation, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.

The tensions escalated following a missile and drone operation by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), targeting 85 US military sites, including strategic locations such as Salman Port and Ali Al-Salem Air Base. In retaliation, the US military conducted a series of strikes against Iran, targeting over 80 sites in response to Iranian aggression towards commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

The ongoing conflict between Iran and the US has been under negotiation since a memorandum of understanding was reached on June 17, aimed at resolving hostilities that began in late February. However, the recent surge in military actions poses a significant challenge to these peace efforts.
