Rubio Advocates for European Defense Responsibility During Greece Visit

Athens:US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the need for European nations to take on a greater share of their continent's defense responsibilities during his visit to Greece. He praised Athens for meeting its security spending targets, highlighting Greece's commitment to allocating 5% of its GDP to defense.

According to Anadolu Agency, Rubio announced Athens' participation in the US National Guard Bureau State Partnership Program, pairing with the Florida National Guard to enhance military interoperability. Additionally, a new memorandum of understanding was introduced to strengthen counterterrorism efforts through improved intelligence sharing between law enforcement agencies.

Further discussions between Rubio and Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis covered economic and infrastructure cooperation. The focus was on expanding US liquefied natural gas shipments and constructing regional gas and electricity interconnectors. The US is also collaborating with Greek authorities to combat illicit antiquities trafficking.

Rubio addressed concerns about emerging super intelligence risks, stating that the US is working with international partners to maximize benefits while mitigating threats. Gerapetritis highlighted ongoing international issues, including conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, emphasizing the need for peace in the region and the continuation of a 20-point plan for Gaza's reconstruction.

Defense cooperation was also a topic of discussion, with plans to upgrade Greece's F-16 aircraft and integrate F-35 fighter jets into the Greek Air Force. Rubio attended the US-Greece Strategic Dialogue's opening session and planned meetings with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, marking the second leg of his European tour.
