Russia: Russia announced on Thursday that it will commence a unilateral ceasefire in Ukraine starting at midnight Thursday (2100 GMT) in observance of the May 9 Victory Day celebrations. This ceasefire is set to last until Sunday, during which time Russia has committed to halting all front-line hostilities and airstrikes targeting Ukraine's military-industrial complex and armed forces.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Russian Defense Ministry issued a statement urging Ukraine to reciprocate by observing the ceasefire. The statement also included a caution that Russia would "respond appropriately" to any breach of the ceasefire or attacks on populated areas and facilities within Russian regions. Additionally, Russia reiterated its warning of a potential "massive" missile strike on Kyiv's center should Ukraine attempt to disrupt the Victory Day celebrations in Moscow on Saturday.
The Russian Defense Ministry initially announced the truce earlier in the week, emphasizing the hope that Ukraine would mirror this gesture during the Victory Day celebrations on May 8-9. The Ministry also urged Kyiv civilians and foreign diplomatic mission employees to leave the city promptly in light of potential escalations.
