Moscow:Russia has proposed restoring its cooperation with Afghanistan through the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). This was suggested during talks between Sergey Shoygu, head of Russia's Security Council, and Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban administration's top diplomat.
According to Anadolu Agency, Shoygu emphasized that integrating Afghanistan into international relations and projects is crucial for regional security. He suggested resuming engagement through the SCO's established contact group.
Shoygu expressed Russia's commitment to a united and peaceful Afghanistan, indicating readiness to cooperate in combating terrorism and drug-related crime. He criticized Western suggestions of reintroducing US and NATO military presence in Afghanistan as unacceptable, hoping other countries would recognize the Taliban-led government as Russia has done.
Muttaqi thanked Russia for its recognition and expressed Kabul's desire to strengthen ties, particularly in economy and security. He praised the Moscow format consultations as a significant initiative for regional political dialogue, emphasizing the need for its continuation and development.
During his visit, Muttaqi also met with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk and participated in Moscow format consultations and bilateral talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in August 2021 after the US-led forces' withdrawal. Russia recognized the Taliban government in July 2025, being the first to do so.
