Yemeni Government Forces Launch Major Operation Against Houthis in Taiz

Taiz:The Yemeni government forces initiated a large-scale military operation against the Houthis on Tuesday, targeting the Al-Wazi'iyah district in the southwestern province of Taiz. This offensive is part of the broader "Dawn of Yemen" operations.

According to Anadolu Agency, The Nation's Shield Forces reported that the operation aims to restore state institutions and end the Houthi control described as a 'coup.' During the offensive, government forces gained control of key hilltops overlooking Al-Mansoura as Houthi fighters retreated.

Local sources informed state-run Aljoumhouriya TV that airstrikes targeted Houthi reinforcements near the center of the Al-Wazi'iyah district. Concurrently, government forces continued their advance for a second day in the southern Marib province under the same operation.

A military source from the Armed Forces Media Center revealed that government troops expelled Houthi forces from vast areas and several strategic mountain ranges, such as Thamad, Al-Qaima, and Al-Muqaylat, as well as other significant locations. Dozens of Houthi fighters were reportedly killed, wounded, or captured, with government forces also destroying three weapon positions and disabling military vehicles.

Operation Dawn of Yemen officially began on Monday, with Presidential Leadership Council Chair Rashad al-Alimi stating the goal to restore state institutions and reclaim the capital Sanaa. The operation has expanded to multiple fronts, with government forces reclaiming the strategic Bab el-Mandeb area and the Dhubab district, supported by the Southern Giants Brigades and Nation's Shield Forces along Yemen's western coast.

The Saudi-led coalition confirmed the participation of 100 fighter jets, destroying 324 'high-value targets' and providing continuous air support. The Yemeni army reported approximately 100 Houthi fighters killed and 150 wounded in Monday's operations in Taiz, with several strategic mountain positions recaptured.

This escalation marks one of the most significant rounds of fighting since a UN-brokered truce in April 2022, which had brought a period of relative calm. The ongoing conflict in Yemen began when the Houthis seized Sanaa and other provinces in 2014, leading to the Saudi-led coalition's intervention in 2015 in support of the Yemeni government.
