Damascus: Russia stated late Tuesday that the future of its military bases in Syria remains a topic for further discussion, following a meeting between a Moscow delegation and Ahmed al Sharaa, the leader of Syria's new administration, in Damascus. Mikhail Bogdanov, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister, emphasized to journalists that "this issue requires additional negotiations," and noted that there is an agreement to continue in-depth consultations regarding various areas of cooperation.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Russian delegation, which held over three hours of what were described as 'constructive' talks with the Syrian administration, reiterated its steadfast support for Syria's unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty. The Russian officials stressed the importance of addressing Syrian issues through an 'inclusive political dialogue.'

Bogdanov expressed hope for a future visit to Moscow by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani. The visit by the Russian delegation, led by Bogdanov and Presidential Special Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentiev, marked the first trip by Russian officials to Syria since the regime of Bashar Assad was toppled last December.

This diplomatic engagement occurred shortly after the European Union linked the lifting of sanctions on Syria to the removal of foreign military forces from the country, prompting calls for Russia to evacuate its military installations in Khmeimim and Tartus.
