Moscow: Russia on Thursday urged Iran and all regional partners to “exercise restraint and caution” amid escalating tensions, which the Kremlin described as “unprecedented.”

According to Anadolu Agency, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized Russia’s commitment to maintaining and developing relations with Iran while advocating for a diplomatic approach to resolving regional issues. Peskov highlighted the importance of prioritizing political and diplomatic means to address any disputes.

Peskov’s remarks coincided with the conclusion of a second round of indirect negotiations between the US and Iran, mediated by Oman. Both parties acknowledged progress in these talks, despite the backdrop of increasing US military presence in the region. This includes the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group, the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier, and additional fighter jets.

US Vice President JD Vance described the negotiations as “productive in some ways,” although he noted that Tehran had not yet agreed to engage on certain “red lines” set by former President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi characterized the discussions as “more constructive.”

The Geneva meeting marked the second round of negotiations following US President Donald Trump’s order for strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities last June. The initial round took place in Muscat, Oman, on February 6.

In addition to addressing the negotiations, Peskov commented on an upcoming naval drill involving Russia and Iran in the Sea of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean. He assured that the exercise was planned and agreed upon in advance.
