Russian President Putin ‘Has Bitten Off More Than He Can Chew’: MI6 Chief

Istanbul: MI6 chief Richard Moore on Friday criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin's role and stance on the ongoing war with Ukraine, saying Putin "has bitten off more than he can chew."

According to Anadolu Agency, Moore addressed a ceremony at the UK General Consulate in Istanbul, marking his departure as the chief of the intelligence. He stated that Putin underestimated the Ukrainians, thinking he would achieve an easy victory. Moore emphasized that Putin's actions have inadvertently strengthened Ukrainian national identity, accelerated the country's Western trajectory, and influenced Sweden and Finland to join NATO.

During his tenure, Moore focused on the Russia-Ukraine war, noting the UK's leadership in supporting Ukraine's defense and praising Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's resilience and leadership. Recalling his early interactions with Zelenskyy, Moore expressed admiration for the Ukrainian leader's growth and determination.

Moore lauded the British people's solidarity with Ukraine, highlighting the unwavering support from successive UK prime ministers. He acknowledged the immense suffering of the Ukrainian people, noting the severe levels of death and destruction reminiscent of World War II, and criticized Russia's intensified attacks on civilian targets.

Moore also pointed out casualties in Russia, attributing them to Putin's disregard for human life, including that of his own citizens. He commended US President Donald Trump's efforts to end the war and Zelenskyy's willingness to make difficult compromises. However, Moore criticized Putin's lack of genuine interest in negotiations, asserting that Putin is only interested in Ukraine's total surrender.

Moore highlighted internal resistance within Russia, mentioning figures like Alexei Navalny, and invited Russians with truths to share to contact MI6. He called for those disillusioned by Putin's agenda to collaborate with MI6, emphasizing the importance of intelligence collaboration and the bravery of agents worldwide.

Discussing MI6's role in global intelligence, Moore emphasized the UK's collaborative approach and the need for modernization and adaptation. He urged MI6 to build stronger tech partnerships and connect more openly with the public, while also addressing diversity issues within the organization.

Moore underscored Trkiye's critical role in the international system, praising Ankara's support for Ukraine's sovereignty and its alignment with London's goals in maintaining stability in regions like the Caucasus and Central Asia. He acknowledged Trkiye's efforts against terrorism and its commitment to international law, noting their shared objectives in the Middle East and counterterrorism initiatives.
