Trump Praises Call with Xi, Hints at TikTok Deal Progress

Washington: President Donald Trump announced that he had a "very productive" phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where they made headway on significant issues such as trade, the fentanyl crisis, the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and the approval of a deal involving TikTok's US operations.

According to Anadolu Agency, Trump shared on his social media platform that he appreciated the "approval" of the TikTok deal and mentioned that both leaders anticipate further discussions and a meeting at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, scheduled to be held in South Korea on October 31. Trump also revealed plans to visit China early next year, with Xi expected to visit the US at a suitable time.

TikTok was under threat of a ban in the US unless its American operations were sold to US companies. Trump had recently postponed the ban to allow ongoing negotiations. Although he hinted that a group of American firms would acquire TikTok, the precise details and identities of these companies remain undisclosed.

The conversation between Trump and Xi stirred speculation about the possible conclusion of the TikTok deal. However, the completion of the agreement was not immediately confirmed. Xi stated that while Beijing is clear on the TikTok matter, he did not confirm a finalized deal, emphasizing China's respect for US firms' decisions and advocating for negotiations that align with market principles and Chinese regulations.

Chinese state-run Xinhua News reported that the call was 'pragmatic, positive, and constructive.' Xi cautioned Trump against imposing unilateral trade restrictions on China and reminisced about the support China received from the US and other allies during its resistance against Japanese aggression. He expressed optimism about achieving mutual success and prosperity that would benefit both nations and the world.
