Moscow: Russia's Central Election Commission (CEC) announced on Tuesday that the opposition Yabloko party has been removed from the federal ballot for the upcoming September elections to the State Duma, the lower chamber of parliament.
According to Anadolu Agency, the CEC approved a revised ballot following the Supreme Court's decision, which took effect the day before, to cancel the registration of Yabloko's federal candidate list. The Supreme Court's ruling upheld its earlier August 10 decision in favor of the Rodina political party's lawsuit, which sought the cancellation of Yabloko's federal list registration.
The revised ballot will now feature 10 parties, marking the lowest number of parties in the history of State Duma elections, as reported by the CEC. Historically, there were 13 parties and electoral blocs on the federal ballot in 1993, 43 in 1995, 26 in 1999, 23 in 2003, 11 in 2007, seven in 2011, and 14 each in 2016 and 2021.
The State Duma elections are set to take place from September 18 to 20, with voting extended over three days.
