Second Impeachment Complaint Filed Against Philippine VP Sara Duterte Amid Coalition Rift.

Manila: A second impeachment complaint has been filed against Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte as tensions within the ruling coalition continue to escalate. According to Anadolu Agency, the latest complaint was submitted by over 70 representatives from progressive groups in the House of Representatives, with the Manila Times reporting on the filing. The groups, led by Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan), have accused Duterte of misusing confidential funds. This development follows the first impeachment complaint filed earlier in the week, endorsed by Akbayan party-list representative Percival Cendeña. The vice president is facing increasing scrutiny following allegations that she threatened President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., his wife, and his cousin, who serves as the House speaker, with assassination should she be killed. Despite this, President Marcos has dismissed the potential for impeachment proceedings against Duterte, stating that it would not serve the interests of the Filipino people. In a dram atic turn, Duterte has accused Romualdez, a cousin of Marcos, of desiring her demise, alleging he perceives her as the greatest obstacle to his aspirations for the 2028 presidential election. The impeachment complaints come amidst a backdrop of Duterte's decision to skip a scheduled appearance before the National Bureau of Investigation regarding the case. The political alliance between Marcos and Duterte, which saw them running as running mates in the 2022 elections, has fractured in recent months. This rift prompted Duterte's resignation from her Cabinet position as the education portfolio head in June.
