Seoul: South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Wednesday proposed that his country could serve as a mediator to help ease the ongoing tensions between China and Japan. He emphasized that taking sides would only exacerbate the situation.

According to Anadolu Agency, President Lee made these remarks during a news conference in Seoul. He highlighted the importance of seeking coexistence over division, stating, "Taking sides would only escalate the conflict. This applies to both personal relationships and international relations. Rather than taking sides, it's better to seek ways to coexist."

The tensions between China and Japan intensified last month when Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi remarked that any Chinese attack on Taiwan could legally constitute a 'survival-threatening situation.' This situation could potentially allow Japan to 'exercise the right of collective self-defense.'

China responded strongly to these comments, advising tourists against visiting Japan, halting seafood imports, and postponing a trilateral culture ministers' meeting with Japan and South Korea.
