Washington: Ukraine on Wednesday firmly rejected reports suggesting that Russian forces have taken control of the city of Pokrovsk in the eastern Donetsk region. Ukrainian officials assert that their troops maintain a stronghold in the northern districts, particularly along a crucial railway line, despite ongoing heavy fighting.

According to Anadolu Agency, Dmytro Lykhovii, a spokesman for the General Staff, acknowledged the challenging situation but emphasized that Ukraine's defensive lines remain intact. Lykhovii highlighted that the Ukrainian command is stable and that their units are actively working to dismantle enemy positions. Logistical efforts are reportedly being strengthened in both Pokrovsk and nearby Myrnohrad as Russian forces attempt to amass assault groups and advance around these settlements.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry also weighed in, dismissing what it characterized as 'boastful statements' from Russia about the supposed capture of Pokrovsk, Vovchansk, and Kupiansk. The ministry claims that these assertions are based on staged 'flag-planting' videos aimed at swaying international negotiations. The ministry further stated that additional logistical routes are being organized to ensure supplies reach frontline troops in the contested areas.

Russia, on its part, has claimed the capture of new settlements, including Zelenyi Hai and Dobropillia in the Zaporizhzhia region. These announcements were bolstered by remarks from Russian General Staff chief Valery Gerasimov, who asserted that Pokrovsk and Vovchansk had also fallen under Russian control.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking from Paris, refuted Moscow's claims, stating that Kyiv still holds Kupiansk, though he conceded that Russian advances are encountering 'violent resistance' in some regions. Verifying battlefield claims from either side independently remains a challenge due to the ongoing conflict.
