SEOUL: The leader of South Korea's ruling People Power Party has expressed support for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol following his attempt to impose martial law. Han Dong-hoon, the party chief, stated that it has become evident that Yoon is incapable of fulfilling his presidential duties and emphasized the need for the situation to be addressed through impeachment. According to Anadolu Agency, Han Dong-hoon, who is not a lawmaker and holds no official government position, also suggested the formation of an ethics committee to consider demanding Yoon's resignation from the party. The opposition is anticipated to reintroduce an impeachment motion against Yoon after a previous attempt failed last weekend. To succeed, the opposition requires the support of at least eight ruling party lawmakers in the 300-seat parliament to secure the 200 votes necessary for impeachment. In response to these developments, President Yoon, in his second public address since lifting martial law on December 4, defended his actions and denied any insurrection charges. Yoon stated that his decision to deploy troops to parliament on December 3 was intended to "save the country" from opposition parties he labeled as 'anti-state.' He accused these parties of paralyzing the nation by exploiting their parliamentary majority. Despite losing its majority in the April general elections, the ruling PPP under Yoon's leadership has faced significant political challenges. President Yoon is now the first sitting president in South Korea to face charges of treason and insurrection, as well as a travel ban. In South Korea, a sitting president is immune from arrest except on insurrection charges. A special investigation team attempted to raid Yoon's office on Tuesday, but was blocked by his security team. Yoon maintains that his actions did not constitute "insurrection" and vowed to remain steadfast regardless of the impeachment proceedings or investigations. The imposition of martial law by Yoon on the night of December 3 was swiftly coun tered by 190 lawmakers who passed a motion to lift it, sparking a political crisis and increasing calls for Yoon's resignation, including from members of his own party.
