Ankara:According to Anadolu Agency, Spanish trade unions CCOO and UGT are preparing for a 24-hour general strike this fall to advocate for adequate wages and access to decent housing. This decision comes after the Congress of Deputies rejected royal decree-laws on housing.
The unions stated that the strike requires approval from their highest governing bodies. They plan to coordinate with tenant movements and neighborhood groups to align labor demands with ongoing housing protests. A specific strike date will be decided in consultation with these groups and the Tenants' Union.
The unions are linking the strike to their proposals for the sixth Agreement for Employment and Collective Bargaining, which calls for wage increases between 4% and 7% and includes wage review clauses. Their housing demands encompass a broad social pact, rental price limits, a permanent stock of publicly protected housing, and the effective nationwide implementation of Spain's housing rights law.
Furthermore, the unions are urging employers' organizations to facilitate collective bargaining and ensure wages meet basic needs. They also call upon public authorities to enforce regulations safeguarding the right to housing effectively.
