Sri Lanka Faces Nationwide Power Outage Due to System Instability

Accra:The country experienced a nationwide power outage on Saturday, attributed to system instability. Authorities are actively working to restore electricity supplies, as reported by the government's information department.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the state-owned National System Operator (NSO) is focused on restoring the system and has requested owners of rooftop solar PV systems to disconnect their systems temporarily to aid the restoration efforts.

Energy Minister Anura Karunathilake indicated that a breakdown at the Upper Kotmale Power Station is suspected to have caused the outage. Despite reports of power disruptions across the island, the NSO later denied any power plant breakdowns, confirming that operational hydropower plants remain online to assist in restoring supplies.

The Norochcholai Coal Power Plant was shut down under standard procedures, not due to any mechanical issues. Electricity restoration began around noon, with areas in Colombo, Gampaha, Galle, and Badulla regaining power. The NSO expects the national grid to be fully restored by approximately 630 pm local time (1300 GMT).
