Istanbul: Renowned American photographer Steve McCurry has praised the resilience and fortitude of the people in Gaza despite the hardships they face. In an interview with Anadolu in Istanbul, where his latest exhibition, 'The Haunted Eye,' is on display, McCurry expressed admiration for the Gazans' spirit and determination, drawing a parallel to his iconic portrait 'Afghan Girl,' which also embodied resilience.
According to Anadolu Agency, McCurry's exhibition, making its world premiere at the Tophane-i Amire Culture and Arts Center as part of the Istanbul Culture Road Festival, is attracting photography enthusiasts. Supported by Trkiye's Culture and Tourism Ministry, the exhibition showcases a broader perspective on McCurry's work, curated by Anne Morin. McCurry credited Morin's deep exploration of his archives for bringing a fresh approach to his photography.
McCurry, who has focused much of his career on Asia since his first trip in 1978, emphasized the importance of photography for both journalism and documentation. He noted that photography allows a look into the past, preserving memories of how people lived, dressed, and interacted with their surroundings. He highlighted the timelessness of photography, likening it to essential activities like eating or breathing.
Reflecting on his long friendship with Turkish photographer Ara Guler, McCurry described Guler as generous and knowledgeable, always willing to share his insights. This influence, along with McCurry's own experiences, is evident in the exhibition, which Morin describes as 'a portrait of humanity through the years.'
The exhibition also explores McCurry's use of color and non-color, presenting some of his photos in black and white for the first time, offering new dimensions to his vision. Curator Morin praised McCurry's sensitivity and humanity, elevating him beyond a photojournalist to almost an artist.
The exhibition, part of the 8th edition of 212 Photography Istanbul, will remain open at the Tophane-i Amire Culture and Arts Center until November 30.
