Stockholm: Sweden will invest 8.7 billion Swedish crowns ($916 million) in air defense systems, Defense Minister Pal Jonson announced Thursday. Jonson emphasized the importance of bolstering air defense capabilities to protect both military personnel and critical infrastructure, such as nuclear power plants, railway hubs, and urban areas.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration has commissioned a new mobile counter-drone air defense system. This system is aimed at enhancing Sweden's ability to defend against aerial threats. The procurement process involves collaboration with several companies, including BAE Systems and Saab, under a new agreement.

Minister Jonson highlighted the government's commitment to expanding air defense measures in a news release. He mentioned that protection against aerial threats is a high priority for the government, and further agreements are anticipated to fortify Sweden's defense infrastructure.

Deliveries of the new air defense systems are expected to commence in 2027, as outlined in the report.
