Stockholm:Sweden's newly elected parliament commenced its 2026-2027 session in Stockholm on Tuesday, as the country grapples with forming a new government following recent elections.
According to Anadolu Agency, King Carl XVI Gustaf officially opened the Riksdag at the speaker's request, in a ceremony that included members of the royal family, the prime minister, and parliamentary officials. This event followed a church service at Stockholm's Storkyrkan.
The formal opening occurred shortly after Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson withdrew from efforts to form a government. Neither Andersson nor Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson appeared ready to take the next step for a mandate during interviews on Tuesday.
Andersson suggested that Kristersson should be tasked with exploring government formation, while Kristersson expressed willingness to follow Speaker Andreas Norlen's instructions. Norlen, recently re-elected as speaker, plans further discussions with party leaders and has not dismissed the possibility of a parliamentary vote on a prime ministerial candidate, even if efforts seem unsuccessful.
Coalition disagreements remain a significant hurdle. Centre Party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist emphasized her party's refusal to join a government involving the Left Party due to economic policy differences. Andersson called for compromise, while Left Party leader Nooshi Dadgostar urged the Centre Party to clarify its alliance preferences. Green Party leader Amanda Lind proposed a meeting of parties considering a center-left coalition.
Meanwhile, Sweden Democrats leader Jimmie Akesson insisted on ministerial roles for his party in any supported government. Christian Democrats leader Ebba Busch advocated for votes on prime ministerial candidates to advance the process.
