Zurich: Dozens of Swiss non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have formed an alliance urging immediate action on climate change, warning that this summer's drought and extreme temperatures are the beginning of a worrying new reality, according to media reports on Tuesday.
According to Anadolu Agency, around 70 Swiss civil society organizations working in the climate, health, environmental, and agricultural sectors have launched the "No 50°C summers!" alliance, calling for immediate action against climate change and heat waves. The news outlet Swissinfo reported this development, citing a joint press release from these groups.
The alliance is sounding the alarm that this year's drought and extreme temperatures are becoming the new normal. They have emphasized the need for more effective protection of vulnerable populations, systematic inclusion of green spaces in urban areas, and the refurbishment of buildings, especially schools and public facilities, to enhance their resilience against heat.
In addition to these measures, the groups are advocating for binding regulations to protect workplace health and offer support to farmers facing drought and crop losses.
On Sunday, the Swiss Cities Association echoed these concerns by calling for a nationwide response to climate change and the resulting heat waves. Reports from last week indicated that rivers and streams across Switzerland have fallen to exceptionally low levels amidst the ongoing drought gripping the nation.
