Switzerland to Introduce Temporary Border Checks Over G7 Summit in France

Geneva: Switzerland will introduce temporary border checks along its frontier with France ahead of the upcoming G7 summit, according to Swissinfo on Wednesday. The Swiss government announced that these measures will be implemented from June 10 to 19 due to security concerns related to the summit, which is set to be held in Evian.

According to Anadolu Agency, although the G7 gathering will occur on French soil, Swiss authorities have expressed concerns about potential impacts on nearby Swiss cities such as Geneva and Lausanne, as well as the broader Lake Geneva region. Previous G7 meetings have been marred by unrest, disruptions, acts of sabotage, and property damage, which have necessitated heightened security measures.

The officials also noted the broader security challenges posed by the current geopolitical environment and the significant presence of international organizations in the area. The Geneva canton was responsible for submitting the request to introduce these border controls, the government further explained.

The G7 summit is scheduled to take place from June 15 to 17, with Switzerland taking proactive steps to ensure safety and security during the event.
