Syria and Israel Engage in Indirect Talks to Reduce Tensions: President

Paris: Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa announced that his administration is participating in negotiations with Israel through mediators to prevent an escalation in tensions between the two nations. Speaking alongside French President Emmanuel Macron during his first visit to a European country since assuming office, Sharaa emphasized the importance of these discussions to avoid a situation that neither side could manage.

According to Anadolu Agency, President Sharaa revealed the existence of indirect talks with Israel for the first time. He criticized Israel for conducting over 20 airstrikes on Syria in the previous week and urged a halt to such actions and interference in Syrian affairs. Sharaa reassured that Damascus remains committed to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, which established a ceasefire line in the Golan Heights.

During the conference, Sharaa expressed appreciation for France’s historical support for the Syrian people during the years of revolution. He discussed with Macron how France could assist in Syria’s reconstruction and stability, highlighting the significance of regional stability. Additionally, Sharaa explored prospects for cooperation in security, economy, justice, and counterterrorism with the French president.

President Sharaa also acknowledged the role of France and its citizens in welcoming Syrian refugees and expressed gratitude for the reception he received. He firmly stated that his administration would not permit sectarian strife or violations of Syria’s sovereignty by foreign parties. He asserted that Syria’s future would not be determined in closed rooms or distant capitals.

On the topic of international sanctions, Sharaa argued that they were imposed due to crimes by the former regime and are unjustified following its removal. He also touched upon discussions with Macron regarding the border situation with Lebanon.

In response to a reporter’s question, Sharaa highlighted Syria’s suffering from terrorism under the former regime and expressed solidarity with terrorism victims worldwide, clarifying that Syria has no links to criminal acts outside its borders.

A transitional administration led by President Sharaa was established in Syria in January post the fall of the Assad regime. Bashar al-Assad, who ruled Syria for almost 25 years, fled to Russia in December, ending the Baath Party’s long-standing control since 1963.
