Damascus: Syria's General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport stated that a newly commissioned radar at Damascus International Airport is intended exclusively for civilian use and holds no military function.

According to Anadolu Agency, Omar Hosari, the head of the authority, declared on US social media that the new radar is dedicated to civil air navigation and air traffic management. The statement emphasized that the radar operates under the full and direct authority of the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, adhering to national laws and internationally recognized standards.

The statement further explained that the radar is part of the ongoing modernization of civil aviation infrastructure, designed to enhance air safety and improve the efficiency of airspace management. It was firmly stated that the radar has no military function or non-civil application.

Additionally, the authority reaffirmed its commitment to the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation and to the standards and recommended practices issued by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The statement also rejected any attempts to politicize or militarize civil aviation infrastructure.

These clarifications came in response to claims made in Israeli media, which suggested that the new radar posed a significant challenge to Israeli fighter jets.
