Daraa:Damascus Syria has summoned the Jordanian ambassador, Sufian al-Qudah, to Damascus in response to Jordanian airstrikes that resulted in civilian casualties, including children, in the southern Daraa province. This action was confirmed by a statement from the Syrian Foreign Ministry's media department, as reported by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the formal protest note was handed to the ambassador regarding the strikes on civilian sites. This development followed a recent agreement between Syria and Jordan to establish a joint security committee aimed at investigating the airstrikes and enhancing coordination to protect civilians and uphold Syrian sovereignty.
The agreement was reached after a late-night conversation between Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and his Jordanian counterpart, Ayman Safadi. Safadi expressed regret for the casualties and extended condolences to the Syrian people, clarifying that the strikes were aimed at ISIS positions based on intelligence regarding confirmed threats and imminent attacks on Jordan.
Syrian authorities reported that the airstrikes, which took place on Monday, resulted in the deaths of seven individuals. Meanwhile, Jordanian government spokesman Mohammad al-Momani stated that the operation killed over 20 ISIS members and destroyed a significant weapons depot. The Jordanian military specified that the operation targeted groups linked to a recent attack on mourners at a church in Jordan's Karak province, which resulted in nine fatalities. Syria has condemned the strikes as a breach of its sovereignty, noting that they were conducted without coordination with Damascus.
