New york: Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has issued a stern warning that any delay or obstruction in lifting sanctions on Syria equates to complicity in the continued suffering and deaths of the Syrian people. In an interview with CBS released on Sunday, al-Sharaa stressed the urgent need for the international community to cease actions that hinder Syria's recovery and reconstruction efforts.
According to Anadolu Agency, al-Sharaa stated, "Anybody who stands against the lifting of sanctions would be complicit in killing the Syrian people once again." He defended his administration against critics who accuse him of shifting positions to suit changing circumstances, asserting that his government has rescued Syrians from the oppressive previous regime. Al-Sharaa highlighted Syria's efforts to combat ISIS, remove foreign militias, and support victims of chemical attacks, tasks he believes should have been addressed by the global community.
Al-Sharaa's visit to the United States marks a significant moment as he becomes the first Syrian president to speak at the UN General Assembly since 1967. He expressed appreciation for US President Donald Trump's decision to lift sanctions, describing it as "quick, courageous and historic." Al-Sharaa emphasized the importance of discussing various issues and mutual interests with the US and indicated his willingness to engage in further dialogue with Trump to restore and strengthen bilateral relations.
The lifting of US sanctions was announced by Trump in July 2025 after a meeting with al-Sharaa in Riyadh. Subsequently, the US Treasury Department permitted American businesses to resume operations in Syria. This development follows the departure of Bashar al-Assad to Russia last December, ending the long-standing Ba'ath Party rule. Since the formation of a transitional administration under al-Sharaa in January, Syria has embarked on a path of political and economic reform, aiming to foster social unity and enhance international cooperation.
