US Lawmakers Make Landmark Visit to China Amid Tensions

Beijing: A bipartisan delegation of US lawmakers on Sunday visited China, marking the first such visit since 2019. The important event signifies a step towards managing the US-China relationship, which has been strained over various geopolitical issues.

According to Anadolu Agency, US Ambassador to China David Perdue took to US social media company X to express his welcome to the delegation, which was led by Democratic Representative Adam Smith. Perdue emphasized the significant role this group plays in handling the complex dynamics between the two nations. Adam Smith, a representative from Washington state, is recognized for his previous role as chair of the House Armed Services Committee and his current position as the leading Democrat on the committee.

The delegation also included notable figures such as Michael Baumgartner, Ro Khanna, and Chrissy Houlahan, all serving as members of the House of Representatives. This visit comes on the heels of a phone conversation on Friday between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, where they addressed the contentious TikTok issue. During the call, Xi emphasized the need for the US to foster an open, fair, and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese investors.

Following the call, President Trump informed reporters in the Oval Office that President Xi had approved a TikTok deal. Trump remarked, "I had a great call with President Xi, and as you know, he approved the TikTok deal. We have to get it signed. I guess it could be a formality."

In addition to the TikTok ownership debate, the delegation's agenda is expected to include discussions on crucial topics such as trade tariffs, cybersecurity, the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, and policies concerning Hong Kong and Taiwan. These discussions are pivotal as both nations navigate their intricate relationship amid ongoing global challenges.
