Damascus: Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa announced that Syria supports Lebanon's initiatives to disarm Hezbollah, emphasizing the grave threat posed by the current regional escalation to security.

According to Anadolu Agency, Sharaa's comments were made during a virtual meeting with Middle Eastern leaders, organized by the European Commission, focusing on military developments and promoting diplomacy. He expressed backing for the 'serious and decisive steps' taken by Iraq and Lebanon to keep conflict at bay, affirming Syria's alignment with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in the disarmament efforts.

Sharaa stressed that the escalation presents an existential threat to the region, warning of the broader implications of potential closures of the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on Gulf energy infrastructure. Syria, strategically positioned amid Lebanon, Iraq, and the occupied Syrian Golan, is directly affected by these developments.

He reiterated Syria's firm stance against attacks on Arab sovereignty and condemned Iran's destabilizing actions in Arab capitals. Highlighting Syria's pivotal role in regional stability, Sharaa noted that Damascus has coordinated with regional states and bolstered its defenses along its borders.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in over 1,200 deaths and more than 10,000 injuries from US and Israeli attacks on Iran since late February, according to Iranian authorities. In response, Tehran has launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf nations housing US military installations.
