Syrian President Meets US Special Envoy in Istanbul to Discuss Sanctions Relief

Istanbul: Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa met with Tom Barrack, the US ambassador to Trkiye and special envoy to Syria, in Istanbul. The meeting was part of a high-level Syrian delegation's visit to Trkiye, as confirmed by Foreign Ministry sources.

According to Anadolu Agency, the engagement involved Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, who joined President al-Sharaa in discussions with Barrack. This significant diplomatic meeting aimed to implement President Trump's decision to open avenues for peace and prosperity in Syria, as articulated by Barrack in a post on X.

Barrack highlighted President al-Sharaa's appreciation for America's swift action in lifting sanctions. This includes waiving Caesar Act sanctions for 180 days and the US Treasury Department's issuance of General License 25 and other sanctions relief measures, as announced by Secretary Rubio. The US envoy underscored the importance of supporting the Syrian populace after prolonged conflict, emphasizing that prompt removal of sanctions is crucial for enabling regional partners to provide essential aid.

The discussions also focused on fostering conditions for the Syrian population to thrive, aligning with President Trump's objectives. Barrack emphasized that lifting sanctions is essential to maintain the primary goal of defeating ISIS and providing the Syrian people with a chance for a better future. He also praised President al-Sharaa for taking significant steps towards addressing foreign terrorist fighters, counter-ISIS measures, relations with Israel, and issues concerning camps and detention centers in Northeast Syria.

Both parties expressed their commitment to continue these dialogues and work collaboratively to encourage private sector investment in Syria. This includes potential investments from regional and global partners such as Trkiye, the Gulf, Europe, and the United States, aimed at rebuilding Syria's economy.

The meeting was described as historic, signaling a shift away from sanctions and a joint dedication to advancing investment and development initiatives. Barrack concluded by affirming the shared vision of a new, welcoming Syria, free from sanctions, as endorsed by President Trump.

This diplomatic engagement follows Barrack's recent appointment as the special envoy to Syria. The Trump administration is actively working on lifting sanctions, a move announced by Trump at an investment forum in Saudi Arabia. This decision was made in response to requests from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The recent historic meeting between Trump and President al-Sharaa in Riyadh marked the first encounter between US and Syrian leaders in 25 years.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed support for the new Syrian government's success, warning that its failure could lead to further conflict and regional instability. Rubio emphasized the importance of aiding the government to prevent full-scale civil war and chaos, which could destabilize the region.
