Damascus: The Syrian government has declared its recent security operation in Aleppo as a strategic move against the YPG/SDF, labeling it a 'limited law-enforcement measure' aimed at thwarting activities perceived as threats to regional security. The operation was focused on the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods, aiming to restore public order and safeguard civilians, following recurring 'violations' of previously established security arrangements with the SDF.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Syrian Foreign Ministry emphasized that the intervention was not a military campaign and did not target any group on ethnic or religious grounds. The operation was strictly aimed at armed groups violating agreed security frameworks, with accusations of serious offenses, including the recruitment of minors. The government underscored its commitment to civilian protection by coordinating with humanitarian organizations to establish safe corridors and response points.
The ministry highlighted the breakdown of security agreements made in April 2025, which were intended to cease non-state military activities in the affected neighborhoods. The breach of these agreements by the SDF prompted the government's response. Plans are underway to survey impacted areas and remove unexploded ordnance as initial steps to restore normalcy for civilians.
The Syrian authorities stressed the importance of restoring state authority over weapons to maintain stability and support the political process. They reiterated the integration of the Kurdish community into Aleppo's social fabric and national institutions, underscoring the necessity of preventing Syrian territory from being used for armed activities that jeopardize regional security.
The Foreign Ministry expressed appreciation for the supportive roles of various international entities and leaders, including Trkiye, the US, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, France, the UK, and Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani, in promoting Syria's stability and territorial integrity.
The announcement by the Syrian Army's Operations Command to halt military operations in Sheikh Maqsoud followed an escalation of conflict with the YPG/SDF, which had resulted in civilian casualties and significant displacement. The SDF's actions since Tuesday, including shelling of neighborhoods and military positions, have resulted in nine deaths, 55 injuries, and the displacement of approximately 165,000 residents.
The Syrian government remains focused on security and stability across the nation following the removal of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December 2024, after over two decades of rule. Despite efforts to integrate the SDF into state institutions, the group has yet to comply with agreed terms, prompting continued government action.
