Thousands of US Federal Employees Access Sensitive Documents Under Biden, Trump: Report

Washington: Over 11,000 federal employees in the US under both the Biden administration and the current Trump administration have accessed sensitive documents, including White House floor plans and vendor banking information.

According to Anadolu Agency, this incident has raised significant concerns over data security and handling processes within federal agencies.

The report highlights that career employees at the General Services Administration (GSA), responsible for supporting federal operations and managing real estate, were involved in the oversharing of sensitive documents. This situation led to a cybersecurity incident report and subsequent investigation last week, underscoring the potential risks associated with improper document sharing practices.

The records indicate that a Google Drive folder containing sensitive documents was accidentally shared with the entire GSA staff, which comprises over 11,200 individuals, as noted in the agency's directory. Among the documents shared were plans for a White House visitor center blast door and bank details for a vendor linked to a Trump administration news conference.

Nine out of the 15 files were classified as sensitive but unclassified (CUI), and at least 10 files were accessible and editable by anyone within the agency. The file-sharing began in early 2021, during President Biden's term, and continued into the current Trump administration, with a recent incident occurring last week.

In a related revelation, last month, Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic magazine, mentioned being inadvertently included in a messaging group where high-ranking officials, including US Vice President JD Vance, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, discussed plans for an attack on Houthi targets in Yemen. This discussion took place hours before the attack occurred on March 15, further amplifying concerns about information security lapses.
