Istanbul: Trkiye's electric vehicle (EV) market has experienced significant growth from January to November, with sales doubling to 166,665 units, up from 83,298 units in the previous year. This increase highlights a transformative shift in consumer preferences and market dynamics, according to data from the Automotive Distributors' and Mobility Association (ODMD).
According to Anadolu Agency, the overall Turkish automotive market saw sales of 442,650 gasoline cars, 251,992 hybrid cars, 69,741 diesel cars, and 7,399 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cars during the first eleven months of the year. Fully electric car sales totaled 164,665 units, and when including extended-range EVs, the total reached 166,665 units, representing 17.8% of the market. This marks a considerable shift as gasoline and diesel vehicle sales continued to decline over the same period.
The data revealed a 15.5% decrease in gasoline car sales and an 18.8% decline in diesel car sales. In contrast, LPG car sales increased by 33.9%, hybrid cars by 71.3%, and fully electric cars by an impressive 111.4%. This trend reflects global manufacturers' decisions to phase out diesel car production, leading to fewer new diesel models entering the market.
Gasoline vehicles now account for 47.2% of the Turkish car market, down from a 62% share last year. Diesel cars saw their market share decrease from 10.1% to 7.4%, while LPG cars constituted 0.8% of the market. Simultaneously, the market share for fully electric vehicles rose from 9.2% to 17.6%, and hybrids increased from 17.4% to 26.9%. Collectively, all EVs, including fully electric, extended-range, and hybrid models, comprised 44.7% of the market, with 418,657 units sold. Notably, four out of every ten cars sold in Trkiye were electric or hybrid during this period.
The report also highlighted that plug-in hybrid sales surged to 42,857 units, capturing 4.6% of the market, and representing a 658.9% increase compared to the same period last year. In November alone, 17,892 fully electric cars were sold, accounting for 17.1% of the market, while 32,263 hybrid cars were purchased, representing a 30.8% market share.
