Trump Advisers See Potential for Improved US-Israel Relations Without Netanyahu

Washington:Several senior advisers to US President Donald Trump believe that an Israeli government without Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could facilitate better cooperation on regional priorities. This perspective persists despite Trump's public endorsement of Netanyahu ahead of the recent election.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, dissatisfaction with Netanyahu has been growing within Trump's inner circle over the past six months. This discontentment has been particularly pronounced following the conflict with Iran and disagreements regarding Washington's broader Middle East policies.

Vice President JD Vance is among the senior officials expressing disillusionment with Netanyahu, citing concerns that Netanyahu's pre-war assessments provided to the White House were erroneous. Vance has refrained from endorsing Netanyahu, emphasizing that Trump's stance is what ultimately matters.

Additional concerns have been raised by other senior officials regarding Israeli policies in Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, and the occupied West Bank. These include Netanyahu's hesitance to advance Trump's Gaza peace plan and his failure to address settler attacks against Palestinians. Trump's envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, have voiced frustration over the delays in implementing the Gaza plan, while envoy Tom Barrack has expressed concerns about Israeli military operations in Syria. Furthermore, Secretary of State Marco Rubio's team believes that Israel could take more steps to strengthen Lebanon's government.

Despite these tensions, Trump endorsed Netanyahu on Sunday, indicating that Netanyahu's defeat could affect US-Israel relations. Some advisers believe that a new Israeli government, potentially without Netanyahu's far-right coalition partners, might provide Washington with greater flexibility in pursuing diplomatic agreements across the region.
