Washington: US President Donald Trump spoke on the phone with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the ongoing Middle East conflict and the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, according to the US ambassador to India.

According to Anadolu Agency, Trump and Modi discussed the current situation in the Middle East, emphasizing the significance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open for global trade, as shared by Sergio Gor on the US social media platform X. Prime Minister Modi expressed having a "useful exchange of views" with President Trump, highlighting India's support for de-escalation and the restoration of peace. Modi stressed the necessity of ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains accessible and secure, considering its global importance. He also mentioned that both leaders agreed to maintain communication regarding efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region.

The regional tension in the Middle East has been escalating since the joint offensive by the US and Israel on Iran, which began on February 28. The conflict has resulted in over 1,340 casualties, including Iran's then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In response, Iran has launched multiple drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and Gulf countries that host US military facilities.

The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime passage through which approximately 20 million barrels of oil are transported daily, has been significantly disrupted since early March. This disruption has led to increased shipping costs and a surge in global oil prices. On Monday, President Trump announced a five-day delay in strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure, citing 'very good and productive' discussions with Tehran. However, Iranian officials have denied any recent talks with the US.
