Palm beach: A company associated with President Donald Trump has filed trademark applications to use his name for airports, coinciding with discussions among Florida lawmakers about renaming Palm Beach International Airport in his honor, as reported on Wednesday.

According to Anadolu Agency, public records reveal that DTTM Operations, affiliated with the Trump Organization, submitted applications on February 13 for ‘President Donald J. Trump International Airport’ and ‘Donald J. Trump International Airport,’ as reported by ABC News.

Trump Organization spokesperson Kimberly Banza informed ABC News that these filings aim to prevent unauthorized use of the name by ‘bad actors.’ She clarified that neither Trump nor his family would profit financially from any airport renaming through royalties or licensing fees.

Critics have raised concerns regarding the potential for conflicts of interest as Trump remains in office. Dylan Hedtler-Gaudette from the Project on Government Oversight emphasized, as noted by ABC News, that the president should adhere to conflict-of-interest laws to ensure decisions serve the public interest.

Trademark attorney Josh Gerben, in a blog post referenced by ABC News, highlighted that while airports have historically been named after former presidents, a sitting president’s private company seeking trademark rights in advance is ‘unprecedented.’

The Republican-controlled Florida Legislature recently advanced a proposal to rename Palm Beach International Airport after Trump.
