Washington: US President-elect Donald Trump issued a warning Saturday to nations that he would impose a 100% tariff on any BRICS country that attempts to move from the US dollar in international trade. Referring to the economic alliance of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa-now expanded to include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates-Trump emphasized the importance of the US dollar in global economic activities. According to Anadolu Agency, Trump took to Truth Social to express his concerns about the BRICS countries' intentions to move away from the US dollar, noting that such actions would not be tolerated. He demanded a commitment from these countries to continue using the dollar as their reserve currency and to refrain from supporting or creating a new BRICS currency. Failure to comply, he warned, would result in these nations facing 100% tariffs and losing access to the US market. The BRICS nations have been exploring the possibility of shifting away from the dollar in recent years, with conversations gaining momentum following US sanctions on Russia in 2022 after its military actions in Ukraine. Trump asserted that the US dollar's dominance in international trade would not be threatened and that any country attempting to replace it should be prepared to sever economic ties with America. This latest threat aligns with Trump's previous tariff proposals, including a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada and an additional 10% tariff on China, aimed at addressing illegal migration and drug trafficking into the US. A spokesperson for the Trump transition team did not immediately respond to requests for clarification on the tariff specifics for BRICS nations or China.
