Washington: US President Donald Trump made bold assertions on Monday, claiming that American forces have the capability to "take out" Iran in just one night, possibly as soon as the following evening. Speaking to reporters, Trump set a stark deadline for Iran, indicating that by Tuesday night at 8 pm EDT (0000GMT Wednesday), significant infrastructural destruction could occur if no agreement is reached.
According to Anadolu Agency, Trump emphasized that the US is currently engaging with a cooperative Iranian negotiator, who is participating with genuine intent. He praised the involvement of several "incredible countries" in efforts to de-escalate tensions.
In a related development, Trump detailed a recent rescue mission for a missing US service member. The operation involved 155 aircraft, including bombers, fighters, and refueling tankers, supported by 200 Special Forces personnel. CIA Director John Ratcliffe disclosed that the agency conducted a "deception campaign" to locate the airmen, employing classified assets in a remote area.
Trump recounted the high-risk nature of the rescue, revealing that large aircraft used for extraction were destroyed to prevent Iranian capture. Over the past month, US forces have completed extensive combat operations over Iran, striking numerous targets, with the recent loss of an F-15 being the first of its kind.
The President also addressed a media leak he claimed compromised the latest rescue mission, criticizing an unidentified outlet for reporting on the situation. Trump threatened legal action against the responsible journalist, citing national security concerns.
Additionally, Trump proposed that the US should charge tolls in the Strait of Hormuz, arguing that as the victorious party, it is entitled to such actions.
In discussing NATO's involvement, Trump expressed disappointment over the alliance's reluctance to assist in securing the Strait. He suggested that NATO's stance has left a permanent blemish on its reputation and highlighted that Russian President Vladimir Putin fears the US rather than the alliance itself.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced an escalation in military strikes, with an increased volume of operations planned. CENTCOM confirmed the recovery of two service members after their aircraft was downed, as US and Israeli actions since late February have resulted in significant Iranian casualties, including the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran has retaliated by targeting US allies in the region and imposing restrictions on maritime traffic through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
