Trump to Address Nation Amid Tensions with Iran

Washington: US President Donald Trump announced that he would deliver an address to the nation on Thursday evening at 9 P.M. Eastern Time. The announcement was made on his Truth Social platform, where he urged the nation to pay attention to the forthcoming speech.

According to Anadolu Agency, the announcement came during a period of heightened tensions between the US and Iran. This follows President Trump's declaration of reinstating an "Iranian blockade" and his proposal to charge a 20% fee on cargo transiting through the Strait of Hormuz, in exchange for US protection of the critical waterway. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded by asserting Tehran's role as the "guardian" of the Strait and criticized the proposed fee as excessive, while emphasizing fairness in the matter.

MS Now, citing two White House officials, reported that during his address, Trump plans to disclose newly declassified intelligence reports regarding a foreign nation's intent to interfere in the upcoming 2020 presidential election. The report also noted that key figures such as CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Acting Director of National Intelligence Bill Pulte, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin would join Trump during the speech.

The backdrop to these developments includes a ceasefire agreement reached between the US and Iran in April, followed by a memorandum of understanding to end the conflict that commenced in late February. This agreement included commitments to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz and lift the US blockade of Iranian ports. A 60-day negotiation period was established to address unresolved issues, notably Iran's nuclear program, which had been a significant factor in the US-Israeli military actions.
