Beijing: China declared on Tuesday that the BRICS alliance serves as a crucial platform for collaboration among emerging markets and developing countries, rather than targeting third parties, as tensions rise following US President-elect Donald Trump's tariff threats. During a routine press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian addressed Trump's warning of a 100% tariff on BRICS nations if they shift away from the US dollar, emphasizing the group's commitment to mutual growth and prosperity. According to Anadolu Agency, Lin asserted that BRICS promotes openness, inclusivity, and win-win cooperation, steering clear of confrontation or targeting other nations. She emphasized China's readiness to collaborate with BRICS partners to enhance pragmatic cooperation across various industries, contributing to sustained global economic growth. Trump's recent remarks were directed at the economic coalition consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, which has now expanded to includ e Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. In a related development, Beijing has announced plans to tighten export controls on dual-use items to the US under its Export Control Law and associated regulations. The Chinese Commerce Ministry stated that these measures aim to protect national security, safeguard national interests, and fulfill non-proliferation obligations. The new legislation prohibits exports of dual-use items for military use in the US, particularly those containing gallium, germanium, antimony, and superhard materials. This decision follows the Biden administration's announcement on Monday of new export controls on China, restricting the sale of advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment and high-bandwidth computer memory to the country, as reported by Voice of America. On the same day, Lin expressed Beijing's protest against Washington's latest chip curbs, criticizing the move for damaging the international trade order and destabilizing supply chains. Lin urged the US to ad here to market economy laws and uphold the principles of fair competition.
