Turkish Defense Firm SYS Begins Export of Anti-Drone Heavy Machine Gun

Istanbul: Turkish defense firm Samsun Yurt Savunma (SYS) has initiated overseas shipments of its CANiK M3 FALCON, a next-generation heavy machine gun specifically developed to target drones and unmanned aerial vehicles from helicopters, according to the company's chair. This 12.7x99 mm heavy machine gun was prominently featured at the SAHA 2026 International Defense and Aerospace Exhibition in Istanbul, where Turkish defense firms are introducing new systems and forming international partnerships.

According to Anadolu Agency, SYS Chair Zafer Aral emphasized the CANiK M3 FALCON's role in addressing the challenges posed by low-cost drones and loitering munitions on the modern battlefield. Designed to combat Shahed-type drones, the system allows helicopters to engage these threats effectively. Initial exports have been made to Pakistan and Azerbaijan, highlighting the global demand for such advanced counter-drone solutions.

Aral explained that the system enables helicopters to respond to radar-detected drones. He further noted the operational speed of Shahed-type drones, which can reach up to 250 kilometers per hour, a speed helicopters can match. This capability allows helicopters to engage and neutralize drones efficiently using the FALCONs.

The demand for this system has grown following recent conflicts, leading to the development of a mobile, cost-effective counter-drone solution. The CANiK M3 FALCON boasts a firing rate of 1,200 rounds per minute from helicopters, adapted for aerial use following international requests.

Aral confirmed that shipments of over 40 CANiK M3 FALCONs have begun for integration into more than 20 Azerbaijani helicopters, with initial exports also reaching Pakistan. Preparatory work is underway for potential deployment on Turkey's Gokbey helicopter, with tests completed in Konya in collaboration with Turkish defense giant Aselsan.

At the SAHA 2026 exhibition, SYS also showcased its 'integrated defense ecosystem' vision, presenting the Distributed Mobile Layered Air Defense Architecture. This system combines TRAKON remote-controlled weapon stations, CANiK heavy machine guns, and the VENOM LR medium-caliber cannon system into a single network, designed to establish layered dominance against modern drone threats.

In addition to anti-drone systems, SYS announced a significant agreement with Kosovo to arm existing armored vehicles. The deal involves equipping 100 land vehicles with turrets and 30x113 mm cannons, valued at over $50 million.

Aral highlighted Turkey's growing role in the global defense industry, noting the shift towards unmanned systems and cost-effective weaponry. He emphasized Turkey's unique position in possessing this new war concept and noted ongoing discussions with countries seeking solutions for the evolving battlefield environment, including nations from the Gulf, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Africa.
