Nairobi: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Sunday urged a return to the memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran, highlighting Qatar's diplomatic efforts to mediate the crisis and emphasizing Trkiye's coordination with Doha.
According to Anadolu Agency, Fidan expressed appreciation for Qatar's constructive approach, stating, "I am pleased to see that Qatar is once again trying to do everything it can to resolve this crisis by using all constructive methods and all available channels. Hopefully, we will receive good news in the coming days." He shared these thoughts during an interview with Qatar TV while visiting the Gulf country.
Fidan warned of the economic repercussions resulting from US-Iran hostilities and the risk of escalating conflict that could further destabilize the region. He noted the importance of reviving diplomatic efforts, particularly in light of recent infrastructure attacks.
"Our wish is that an agreement between Iran and America will be reached again as soon as possible. As you know, with Pakistan's mediation, Qatar's intensive contributions and Trkiye's support, a memorandum of understanding had been prepared. However, we have since moved away from that point. We need to return to it," Fidan emphasized.
In discussions with Qatari officials, Fidan reiterated Trkiye's support for Doha's diplomatic endeavors. He stressed the interconnectedness of regional stability and security and Trkiye's commitment to collaboration with Gulf and Islamic countries.
Fidan highlighted the deep historical ties and strategic partnership between Trkiye and Qatar, crediting former Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani for laying the foundation of bilateral relations. Offering condolences on Sheikh Hamad's recent passing, Fidan praised his visionary contributions to Qatar and the broader Islamic world.
Fidan also commended Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for his constructive regional role and efforts to enhance Trkiye-Qatar cooperation in addressing regional challenges. He cited various examples of this cooperation, from Lebanon to Afghanistan, Sudan, Gaza, and the Iran issue, as a model for the region.
"There is a need for constructive cooperation rather than competition in the region, and Qatar is making serious efforts toward that goal," Fidan stated. He acknowledged the progress made by Gulf countries, particularly Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, and Oman, in advancing development and public services while building strong states and world-class cities.
