Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced that the Gaza "Board of Peace" presents a "historic opportunity" to establish lasting peace in the region. Fidan made this statement on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal, emphasizing that the initiative, spearheaded by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, aims to mitigate the prolonged suffering of Gaza's inhabitants, address their humanitarian needs, and foster "a lasting and inclusive peace in the region."

According to Anadolu Agency, Fidan represented President Erdogan at the signing ceremony for the Board of Peace Charter for Gaza in Davos, Switzerland. He highlighted the board's potential role in collaborating with the people of Gaza to shape a sustainable future, aiding the region's recovery, and facilitating the establishment of peace.

Fidan reiterated Turkey's commitment to ensuring that the voices of Gaza's people are acknowledged, their rights protected, and that they can experience peace. This announcement follows last week's revelation by the White House about the formation of the Board of Peace and the approval of a National Committee for the Administration of Gaza. This committee is one of four bodies set to manage the transitional phase in the enclave.

The establishment of the board is aligned with the commencement of phase two of a ceasefire agreement, which ceased Israel's military actions on Gaza. The conflict, which began in October 2023, resulted in over 71,000 deaths and more than 171,000 injuries. This initiative is part of a comprehensive 20-point plan proposed by US President Donald Trump and adopted by the UN Security Council under Resolution 2803 last November.
