Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized the need for national unity in Syria and urged the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to fulfill their responsibilities. At a joint press conference with Omani counterpart Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi in Ankara, Fidan remarked, "In Syria, it is time for national unity. The SDF needs to do its part."
According to Anadolu Agency - English, Fidan criticized the SDF for aligning with Israel's "divide and rule" strategy in the region. He highlighted recent developments in Aleppo, where renewed clashes have resulted in civilian casualties, as a reflection of Ankara's warnings over the past year. Fidan argued that had the PKK/YPG, operating under the SDF name, integrated into Syria sooner, recent violence could have been avoided.
Fidan condemned the PKK/YPG's refusal to compromise and prioritize their interests, stating that the Syrian government is recovering from conflict and improving its counterterrorism capacity. He affirmed Trkiye's commitment to regional stability and peace, expressing concerns over Israel's security strategies that promote division.
Fidan also addressed the situation in Yemen, stressing the risk of regional instability. He praised Saudi Arabia's and Oman's constructive roles in preventing escalation and supporting Yemen's sovereignty and unity, advocating for a political solution based on constitutional legitimacy.
On Gaza, Fidan emphasized the international community's expectation for a full ceasefire implementation, criticizing Israel's actions against civilians. He highlighted the need for calm and humanitarian improvement, noting that Trkiye is monitoring the development of a Peace Council and International Stabilization Force for Gaza's future.
Fidan also criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's actions in Somaliland, labeling Israel's recognition of Somaliland as unlawful and a threat to regional peace. He reiterated that decisions about Somalia and Somaliland should be determined by the Somali people, with Trkiye closely monitoring the situation.
