Doha: Trkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan engaged in discussions on Sunday with Muhammad Darwish Ismail, Chairman of the Hamas Shura Council, and other key members of the group’s political bureau in Doha. The meeting focused on the ongoing ceasefire and the humanitarian situation in Gaza, as confirmed by the Turkish Foreign Ministry on X.
According to Anadolu Agency, this significant diplomatic engagement follows a previous meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Darwish in Ankara. During their January meeting, President Erdogan expressed optimism about the successful implementation of the truce’s subsequent phases, which are aimed at facilitating the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and initiating reconstruction efforts.
Fidan’s visit to Doha marks a critical moment in the peace negotiations. On the first day of his two-day visit, he also met with his Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, and participated in a joint news conference. The discussions are set against the backdrop of a six-week truce, the initial stage of a three-part agreement that seeks to bring an end to the 15-month conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in over 47,000 Palestinian casualties and widespread destruction.
