Ukraine Reports 14 Fatalities in Russian Missile Strike on Poltava


Kyiv: Ukraine has reported that at least 14 people lost their lives following a Russian missile attack on the city of Poltava, which took place a day earlier. The Poltava Regional Military Administration released a statement on Telegram confirming the increase in the death toll, which includes two children. The statement also noted that one individual died in the hospital.



According to Anadolu Agency, the missile strike resulted in injuries to 17 people, including four children. Rescue operations managed to save 22 individuals from the affected area. Initially, the Poltava Regional Military Administration reported 12 fatalities from the attack and indicated that search and rescue activities at the scene are still being carried out.



The missile strike caused damage to 18 residential buildings and several kindergartens in Poltava. As a response to the tragedy, authorities declared three days of national mourning in the region, lasting until February 4. On the day of the attack, Ukraine’s Air Force claimed that Russia launched over 40 missiles toward the country but did not specify how many were intercepted.



Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated the importance of international support for Ukraine, emphasizing that air defense systems and interceptor missiles are vital for saving lives. He urged Ukraine’s partners to fulfill their commitments and increase pressure on Russia.



Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry asserted that it successfully executed an overnight strike targeting gas and energy infrastructure facilities that support Ukraine’s military-industrial complex.
