Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday extended his congratulations to British Prime Minister Starmer for his recent statements regarding the recognition of the state of Palestine. During a phone call, the leaders addressed the bilateral relations between Turkey and the United Kingdom, alongside various regional and global concerns, as announced by the Turkish Communications Directorate.

According to Anadolu Agency, Erdogan highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, emphasizing the global responsibility to take action beyond mere expressions of concern. He underscored the necessity of prompting Israel to engage in a ceasefire and adhere to a two-state resolution. Erdogan also noted Turkey's ongoing efforts in delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza, supporting mediation efforts for a ceasefire, and backing negotiations aimed at peace in the region.

A statement from Starmer's office revealed that the discussion between the leaders covered the "appalling" humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Both leaders agreed on the urgency of an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages without conditions, and the lifting of barriers to humanitarian aid. Starmer elaborated on the UK's initiatives to expedite humanitarian assistance and detailed his collaborative efforts with allies to formulate a long-term peace strategy.

Starmer further reiterated the UK's enduring position that a viable Palestinian state, existing securely alongside Israel, is essential for a just and lasting peace. He conveyed the UK's intention to acknowledge the state of Palestine before the UN General Assembly in September unless Israel takes significant measures to address the crisis in Gaza and commits to a sustainable peace.

In addition, Starmer commented on the situation with Iran, advocating for a diplomatic resolution to Iran's nuclear ambitions and praised Turkey's involvement in facilitating recent discussions. The leaders also reviewed progress on a new export agreement concerning UK-manufactured Typhoon jets to Turkey, expressing anticipation for further dialogue soon.

Last month marked a significant development in UK-Turkey defense relations, as both nations' defense chiefs signed a memorandum of understanding in Istanbul, advancing the export of Typhoon fighter jets.
