Istanbul: Whoever remains silent about the genocide in Gaza is complicit, says Turkish president. The International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF) 2025 showcases Trkiye's rise as a sovereign defense power, the country's president said Tuesday.

According to Anadolu Agency, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, speaking at the opening ceremony of the International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF) in Istanbul, emphasized Trkiye's progress in the defense sector, despite facing embargoes and diplomatic challenges. Erdogan highlighted Trkiye's journey towards independence in defense capabilities, recalling past challenges during the Cyprus incidents and the fight against terrorism when international support was lacking.

Erdogan reflected on the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation, noting that sanctions peaked during this period. He recounted instances where aircraft were seized and basic communication tools were withheld. Erdogan also mentioned the lack of support during tensions with the Assad regime in Syria, where Trkiye's efforts to enhance air defense capabilities were repeatedly thwarted.

In response to these challenges, Trkiye has accelerated its defense investments and adopted a proactive foreign policy. Erdogan stressed that Trkiye's defense industry has achieved a domestic production rate exceeding 80%, significantly reducing foreign dependency. He noted the growth in defense and aerospace exports, which set a record last year, and outlined strategies to further enhance Trkiye's competitiveness in emerging technologies.

The defense fair, held at multiple venues in Istanbul, showcases a range of military equipment and is expected to attract significant attention. The event is organized by Trkiye's presidency in collaboration with various defense institutions.

On the topic of Gaza, Erdogan condemned the silence surrounding the genocide there, labeling it a crime against humanity. He vowed to keep the issue on the international agenda, advocating for a ceasefire and the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. Erdogan highlighted the dire humanitarian situation, particularly the plight of children suffering from hunger, and urged the international community to unite for humanity's sake.
