New york: Two girls were tragically killed on top of a moving New York City subway train on Saturday, reportedly while engaging in the dangerous activity known as 'subway surfing.' A spokesperson for the New York Police Department reported that the victims were discovered atop a Brooklyn-bound J train, adding that their ages have not yet been confirmed.
According to Anadolu Agency, NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow described the incident as a tragedy and highlighted the fatal risks associated with 'subway surfing,' where individuals dangerously ride on top of moving trains. Crichlow stated, "It's heartbreaking that two young girls are gone because they somehow thought riding outside a subway train was an acceptable game."
Crichlow further emphasized the importance of communication, urging parents, teachers, and friends to warn loved ones about the perils of such activities. "Getting on top of a subway car isn't 'surfing' - it's suicide," he added, acknowledging the profound impact on both the families of the victims and transit workers.
New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani also extended condolences to the families affected by the incident, calling it "a stark reminder of the dangers of subway surfing."
