Suwayda: Two civilians were killed in an attack on a passenger bus traveling on the Suwayda-Damascus highway, a Syrian security official reported. The head of internal security in Suwayda province, Hussam al-Tahan, described the incident as a “cowardly terrorist attack” that claimed the lives of two innocent individuals.

According to Anadolu Agency, the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) was informed by al-Tahan that the attack targeted a civilian transport bus on the Suwayda-Damascus Road. This road had been reopened to civilian and commercial traffic in August after being secured following months of suspension due to security unrest in the southern province.

Al-Tahan stated that this incident follows a recent deliberate attack targeting civilians and security patrols in the countryside. He attributed these actions to “outlaws seeking chaos and destruction in Suwayda” and emphasized that the repeated nature of these attacks suggests a single agenda aiming to undermine stability and spread fear among the residents.

Despite these challenges, the security official assured that the security forces remain committed to fulfilling their duties. He pledged that investigations would continue with determination to identify those responsible and prevent further violations.

Suwayda has been under a ceasefire since July 19, following a period of clashes between Druze groups and Bedouin tribes. These clashes resulted in hundreds of casualties. Since the ouster of Bashar al-Assad in late 2024, Syria’s new administration has been implementing measures to restore security, pursue political and economic reforms, promote social cohesion, and enhance cooperation with regional and international partners. Assad, who led Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia last December, ending the Baath Party’s long-standing regime. A transitional administration led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa was established in January.
