Typhoon Nolo Forms After Crossing International Date Line

Ankara:The storm known as Nolo has transitioned from a Category 3 hurricane to a typhoon after crossing the International Date Line in the Pacific Ocean. This change was reported on Sunday, following the storm's activity over nearly three weeks.

According to Anadolu Agency, Before crossing the Date Line, Nolo had maximum sustained winds of 115 mph (185 kph) on Sunday morning Hawaii time. As of Monday morning Japan time, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported that Typhoon Nolo's maximum sustained winds had decreased to 100 mph (161 kph), and it was moving west at 19 mph (31 kph).

John Cangialosi, a senior hurricane specialist with the US National Hurricane Center, noted that the typhoon is not near any land despite its strength, as it is situated over a vast expanse of ocean.

The forecast suggests that Nolo will continue its westward movement while gradually weakening. Previously, the storm had skirted Hawaii as a hurricane a week ago, weakened into a tropical storm, and then regained hurricane strength by Friday. In the northern Atlantic and central and eastern Pacific, tropical cyclones with winds exceeding 74 mph are termed hurricanes, whereas they are called typhoons in the North Pacific.
